The job of the kidneys is to remove excess fluid from the blood and filter out waste products from the body.  There are blood and urine tests which can show how well and how efficiently the kidneys are doing this.  A sick kidney is indicated by elevated blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine values and shows protein in the urine.  If enough protein (albumin specifically) is being dumped in the urine, blood albumin might be low.
