Potassium measurements are useful in monitoring certain medications and conditions which may lower and elevate potassium levels. Potassium is elevated in adrenal cortical insufficiency, acute renal failure and in some cases of diabetic acidosis. It can also be elevated with the use of the medication Spirololactone (Aldactone), Potassium Chloride or Ace Ihibitors such as Lisinopril or Enalapril. Potassium is decreased with the use of diuretics like Furosemide (Lasix) or Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and renal tubular acidosis.
