Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of your joints characterized by pain and stiffness.  Typically, these symptoms worsen with age but depending on the type of arthritis, the severity of these symptoms can oscillate day by day or week by week.
There are many reasons for the inflammation of joints:  injury, infection, uric acid crystal deposits as can occur in gouty arthritis, wear and tear such as occurs in osteoarthritis, or underlying systemic disease like psoriasis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.  The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; however, in osteoarthritis, blood tests are not usually affected.
