11-Deoxycotisol is used to detect the presence of a congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) disorder. CAH involves a group of inherited disorders of the adrenal gland, a small triangular organ located on top of the kidneys which secretes various hormones. CAH is associated with deficiencies in the enzymes required for the production of the steroid hormones cortisol and/or aldosterone.
These adrenal insufficiency disorders are associated with: 1. Primary adrenal insufficiency: Addison disease, adrenal adenoma, 2. Secondary adrenal insufficiency: Pituitary microadenoma, hypothalamic tumor, pituitary apoplexy, head trauma. 3. Tertiary adrenal insufficiency: Hypothalamic disease with decrease in corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)
