This is otherwise known as a red blood cell antibody screen.  It is used to detect antibodies directed against red blood cell antigens other than the usual A and B antigens.  The other name for this test is a “Type and Screen.” This is a useful test when preparing for a blood transfusion or during pregnancy and at delivery.  If an antibody is detected, then an antibody identification test will be conducted as a reflex.  That is, the lab will run this test automatically.  The reflex ID will determine which antibodies are present.
These antibodies could cause hemolytic anemia, or destruction of red blood cells which leads to anemia.
