Your immune system is designed to defend you against foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses.  But, sometimes your body recognizes non microbial substances such as some foods, dust, pollen and grass as foreign invaders and mounts an exaggerated IgE antibody mediated immune response in their presence.
Allergies can develop at any age.  At the same token, an individual can outgrow their allergies over time as well. Before now, the only way to know if you were allergic to certain allergens was to expose yourself to it.  Now, there are blood tests which can help determine your allergies and save you the hassle and discomfort of exposure.
