The C-reactive protein (CRP) is used to detect an inflammatory process and to monitor response to treatment for an inflammatory disorder. When your doctor suspects
that you have an acute condition causing inflammation, such as a serious bacterial or fungal infection or when you are suffering from an inflammatory disorder such as arthritis, an autoimmune disorder, or inflammatory bowel disease he or she may include the C-reactive protein in a panel to help them reach a diagnosis. CRP also appears to be correlated to heart disease risk. Inflammation (swelling) of the arteries has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease.
