All diabetes types, which include Types I, II, and gestational (pregnancy type) are diagnosed and monitored more or less the same way:  a hemoglobin A1c, a fasting plasma glucose, or an oral glucose tolerance test.  The symptoms of diabetes can be silent or heralded by frequent thirst and urination, blurred vision, and unexplained weight loss.  It can blunt or even make silent the symptoms of a heart attack and various infections such as urinary and skin. Diabetes increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases including heart attack and stroke and can lead to kidney failure, blindness and digit or limb amputations if gone unchecked or un monitored. Luckily, there are tests which make diagnosis and monitoring one’s blood sugar feasible.
