Factor V Leiden is a genetic mutation that causes resistance of Factor V protein degredation by activated protein C (APC). This mutation is associated with and increased risk of vascular clots and can be responsible for spontaneous development of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and/or venous thromboembolism (VTE). This test is an important part of a panel of blood tests including activated protein C, protein S, and antiphospholipd antigen when you have had an unexplained blood clot (thrombotic episode), especially when you are less than 50 years old, have recurrent DVT/VTE episodes, or have a strong family history of thrombosis.
