G-6-PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase) is the most common enzyme deficiency in the world. Newborns with G-6-PD may have prolonged and more pronounced neonatal jaundice than other newborns. Older individuals are subject to hemolytic anemia that can be induced by some foods such as lima beans, drugs, and infections. The best time to check for G-6-PD deficiency is when a newborn experiences persistent jaundice that was not due to another identified cause or when you have had one or more occasional episodes of anemia due to red cell destruction that was appearently triggered after a meal, an infection or drugs.
