A hemoglobinopathy evaluation is used to investigate hemoglobin disorders. Most doctors use it as a follow up to further assess abnormal results on a complete blood count (CBC) and/or blood smear. It is also used when you have symptoms of hemolytic anemia (anemia resulting from red blood cell destruction) such as weakness and fatigue and your doctor suspects that you have an abnormal form of hemoglobin (hemoglobinopathy). This evaluation can also be used when you have a family history of hemoglobinopathy and as part of newborn screening.
