A thyroid panel is used to screen for or help diagnose an under-fuctioning or an over-functioning thyroid. The preferred test to screen for thyroid disorders is a thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) test, and a free T4. This combination usually helps your doctor learn if there is a thyroid function problem. But a Total T4 and T3 Uptake are useful in further articulating whether the problem is hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism by calculating something called the Calculated Free T4 index. When the index is elevated, it is usually associated with an over active thyroid (hyperthyroidism), and when it is low, hypothyroidism. A Free T3 can also be used to distinguish this difference.
In addition, your doctor is likely to order the anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibody or anti-thyroglobulin (TG) antibody as well as an ultrasound of the thyroid to further assess your thyroid status.
