The TSH or Thyroid-stimulating hormone is used to screen for and help diagnose thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiters or thyroid cancers and is useful in monitoring their treatments. Thyroxine (T4) is the major secretory hormone of the thyroid. Only 0.03% of T4 is unbound and free for exchange with tissues. Thyroid function may be assessed with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free T4 measurements. This test will automatically check the T4 if the TSH is abnormal.
