Do you have stubborn acne that isn’t responding to over-the-counter treatments? It may be time to see us for professional help.

Here at Monrovia Internal Medicine & Primary Care,  Ulin Sargeant, MD, MPH successfully treats our patients in Duarte, California, who struggle with acne. Dr. Sargeant wants you to know you don’t have to live with acne. Here’s what you can do about it.

Acne basics

Acne occurs when pores get clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells. It can also be caused by bacteria and overactive hormones called androgens (like testosterone) that stimulate oil production and make it easier for bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes to flourish.

Acne can be stubborn and may not respond to store-bought topical creams, face masks, and washes. If your frustration is growing and acne is starting to affect your self-esteem, it’s time to take control of your skin to avoid further damage or scarring.

Acne treatment

Dr. Sargeant offers a variety of treatment options, including medication, chemical peels, and extraction.

Medications

Acne medications can be taken orally (by mouth) or applied directly to the affected areas of the skin. They can reduce inflammation, decrease oil production, fight infections, or speed up cell turnover. The medication you’re prescribed depends on the severity of your acne, your medical history, age, and your level of commitment to treatment. For example, you may need to apply medications and wash your skin a few times each day and take oral medicines.

Types of acne medications include:

  • Antibiotics to kill bacteria and reduce redness and inflammation
  • Oral contraceptives for women who also want the benefit of birth control
  • Anti-androgen agents that stop the overproduction of oils
  • Salicylic acid that has antibacterial properties
  • Topical retinoids that quickly exfoliate the skin, which keeps pores unclogged
  • Topical antibiotics to kill germs combined with other acne-fighting ingredients

Chemical peels

Chemical peels use alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy acids to exfoliate the skin and reduce inflammation. They also have antimicrobial properties to help fight germs. Peels are usually done in a series to improve the look of moderate-to-severe acne on the face and other areas of the body.

Extraction

Resist the urge to pop pimples; otherwise, you could end up with an infection or scars. Dr. Sargeant can release the buildup from some pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads quickly and painlessly with a special tool called an extractor. Your skin will look smoother in a matter of minutes, but you may need it done again in the future if more blemishes form.

Aftercare for your acne treatment

With all of these treatments, it’s important to follow Dr. Sargeant’s aftercare instructions to avoid harming the skin and to promote healing. For example, you may need to avoid sun exposure for a while. And be sure to take your oral medications and use topical gels and creams as instructed to achieve the best results.

Sometimes, it may take a while to find the best combination of therapies for you because each person responds to them differently. Be patient, and before you know it, you’ll have healthy-looking, acne-free skin.
