The HDL cholesterol is checked as part of a general health examination or lipid profile to determine risk of developing heart disease. If you have no other medical problems then your doctor may check this with the rest of your cholesterol profile every 1-5 years. Children should have a lipid profile screening at least once between the ages of 9 and 11 and then again between the ages of 17 and 21.
