Herpes simplex type 1 predominantly is responsible for herpes infection around the mouth and can cause encephalitis and viral meningitis in a certain percentage of patients. Transmission of HSV is most probable in the presence of sores, but it can also occur in a small percentage without signs of outbreak. This test is used to screen for or diagnose infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV) Type 1 and should be ordered if you have symptoms of an infection with HSV, such as blisters or sores around the borders of your lips or symptoms of viral meningitis or if you have certain risk factors.
